Facts About Stink Bug Larvae

There are more than 200 species of stink bugs in North America. Brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSBs) are the focus of this article.

These pests have three distinct developmental stages – egg, nymph, and adult.

Stink Bug Larvae Stages

The BMSB has five nymphal instars (stages), with each stage lasting about one week. The size of the nymphs during their growth period ranges from ⅛” at the first stage to ½” by the fifth stage.

First Stage

First-stage nymphs, which are orange or red in color, remain clustered around their egg mass and will emerge about five days after the eggs have been laid.

Second Through Fifth Stages

At the second stage, stink bug larvae look like ticks as they begin to develop an almost black appearance. In the third through the fifth stages, BMSBs begin to look and act more like adults, but they still lack fully developed wings.
