Dominion Packaging, Inc. and Orkin: Packaging up an Award-Winning Pest Management Program
Located in Richmond, Virginia, Dominion Packaging offers a variety of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions to its customers including printing, finishing and slitting. A driving force behind the success at Dominion Packaging is the idea of continuous improvement, and as a producer of indirect food products, a big part of that improvement process is pest management.
Since 2009 Dominion Packaging has worked closely with its Orkin team to implement proactive sanitation and maintenance to help keep pests out and ensure the safety of its products. In 2012 this effort culminated in the receipt of Dominion Packaging’s first Gold Medal™ IPM Partner Award, presented by Orkin, The IPM Institute of North America and NSF, recognizing outstanding commitment to IPM partnerships.
To learn more about Dominion Packaging’s award-winning pest management program, we spoke with Ron Hoover, materials manager at the Richmond facility. Here is an edited transcription of that interview.
What makes your program award-winning?
In my opinion, we won this award because our team works extremely hard to keep our facility neat and orderly, a task that could not be accomplished without the strong partnership we maintain with Orkin. We work closely with Orkin to address any maintenance issues that arise and we do it in a timely fashion. Orkin makes recommendations based on their third-party audits and service calls, and we trust their advice.
Why is Integrated Pest Management (IPM) so important to your facility?
Dominion Packaging is a manufacturer of indirect food products. As a result, IPM is essential to the success of our business. IPM reduces the risk of contamination and allows us to create customized solutions to suit the unique needs of our facility.
Tell us about your partnership with Orkin.
Our partnership with Orkin is excellent. In fact, we work so closely with our Orkin team that we often think of them as Dominion employees. Their customer service is outstanding and if we have an issue, someone responds quickly and it is taken care of in a timely manner.
