Drywood Termite Droppings
A good way to identify a drywood termite infestation is to examine the fecal droppings that are produced by these termites. Their droppings are very small, sand-like, six-sided fecal pellets called frass. These fecal pellets are expelled from drywood termite nests through small holes that are about 1 to 2 mm in diameter.
The frass is excreted by the termites as they feed in their feeding galleries and is typically found in small mounds that some describe as looking like sawdust or coffee grounds. Frass is usually light-tan to almost black in color. Many pest management professionals also identify drywood frass by rolling it between their fingers and feeling the grit-like texture of the pellets.
The presence of frass does not always indicate an active infestation since frass pellets may continue to exit from holes even though the infestation was resolved and the population has been inactive for a long time.
